This is the film that put Ralph Lauren on the map. Although the 1974 film is a period piece set in the roaring ’20’s Lauren designed all of the male characters’ costumes, using his 1974 fashion line. The film established him as THE purveyor of the old-monied look. Theoni V. Aldredge won an Academy Award for designing the Women’s costumes, all together this is one of the most exquisitely elegant and cohesive film wardrobes in recent memory.
And since every American teenager has been or will be required to read Fitzergerald’s classic novel at one time or another during the course of highschool – it’s especially interesting to see the book come to life. While, the execution of the story is a bit shaky at times and the film (which runs 2hr. 23 minutes) sometimes loses it’s pacing, the look is always on point. Each still of this film looks like it’s from a gorgeous magazine editorial. Looking into this meticulously created, ethereal, and privileged world is the height of escapism. So if you’re so inclined, you can indulge – it’s available via Netflix.
