Steven Meisel (who shot this cover) has always been a leader of the fashion pack in regards to model selection, i.e. his picks invariably go on to industry wide success. What’s noteworthy here is that words like plus-sized, and curvy never appear in the magazine in reference to the cover or the accompanying editorial. These ladies are presented WITHOUT qualification. A sign of new times? Perhaps. Meisel says that the editorial is a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. While her Butterfield 8 era black negligee is in full-effect here, what’s really coming through is a tribute or homage to classic Italian Movie stars like Sophia Lauren and Claudia Cardinale. Regardless of the inspiration, this is clearly a celebration of the hour-glass shaped feminine physique – a silhouette that hasn’t seen the light of fashion day in quite a while. It’s undeniably feminine and sensual and undoubtedly many a man would say highly desirable. But is it, or will it be aspirational for modern young women? Please weigh in.
